Week 6: Georeferencing and Editing

Image
For this week's lab, we georeferenced two raster images of the UWF campus to known buildings and roads. It took me a while to figure out things like how far to zoom in and how closely I needed to match the unreferenced and referenced layers to get low residual values. One problem I kept having was trying to add control points that were already well matched between the layers. It wouldn't let me add a link between two points that were very close together, which makes sense because there's no need for a control point in part of the map that's already accurately georeferenced. Sometimes I had to keep searching around for a while and zoom in to find somewhere to add another control point. I also found it difficult to georeference the Heritage Hall Parcel Survey. One reason was because the area was a lot smaller, with a lot fewer points that could be identified on both the raster image and the survey map. It was also sometimes difficult to see where corners and edges of the ...

Week 5: Adding XY Data Points and Geocoding

Image
Adding XY Data to ArcGIS Pro For the first part of the lab, we created an Excel table of the latitude and longitude of three eagle's nests in Santa Rosa County, FL. The coordinates were given in degrees, minutes, and seconds, so we had to extract each of these numbers and use a formula to convert them to decimal degrees. We then opened this table in ArcGIS Pro and used our new latitude and longitude coordinates in decimal degrees to plot points for the three eagle's nests. Finally, we projected the data to the State Plane Florida North projection. Locations of three eagle's nests (yellow) in Santa Rosa County, FL, projected in NAD 1983 (2011) StatePlane Florida North FIPS 0903 (US Feet) Geocoding For this part of the lab, we took a list of schools in Manatee County, FL and their addresses from the Florida Department of Education website and geocoded them to a map in ArcGIS Pro. We had to rearrange the data from the website in Excel to create a table that could be imported t...

Week 4: Vector Analysis

Image
In Part 1 of this week's lab, we explored geodatabases, queries, and spatial analysis using a variety of spatial data about infrastructure, environmental features, and parcels in Escambia County. I forgot to check the metadata and had to go back at the end of the lab once I looked back over the process summary. I couldn't find the metadata at first--it came up with no information when I clicked on the layers in the Contents pane. Eventually I figured out that I had to click on the geodatabase files in the Catalog pane to view the metadata. I then got a message saying the metadata needed to be updated to ArcGIS metadata format to be viewed for the Pensacola_streets_08 and escambia_cellular feature classes, so I had to Google how to upgrade it. It's ironic that I completely forgot about metadata after reading a chapter about how important it is to evaluate metadata early in a project. I've gotten so used to having every step of a lab spelled out in exact detail that I jus...

Week 3: Data Collection & Projections

Image
Data Collection Using ArcGIS Field Maps ArcGIS Online map of the point data I collected at subway entrance signs. Green = Excellent condition, Yellow = Fair condition, Red = Poor condition. For the first part of this lab, we collected public safety data using ArcGIS Field Maps and categorized each of our features' condition as Excellent, Fair, or Poor. I collected data for 10 signs at entrances to three subway stations in Queens and Brooklyn: the Myrtle-Wyckoff L and M station, the Halsey L station, and the Wilson L station. The majority of these entrances were stairs to underground stations and had back-to-back signs on the fence around the stairs. For these, I chose to evaluate only the sign directly above the stairs. Three of the signs were at ground-level station entrances.  Like most non-New Yorkers, I have definitely been confused by subway entrances in the past. However, after living here for a month, I am (usually) confident about the entrances near me and don't rely on...
